Amphitheater
Get swept away into worlds of magic, beauty, and celebration with three renowned story ballets featuring the choreography of George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins.
Program
Swan Lake (Tschaikovsky/Balanchine)
Fancy Free (Bernstein/Robbins)
Firebird (Stravinsky/Balanchine, Robbins)

Swan Lake (Tschaikovsky/Balanchine)
Distilling the classic story ballet Swan Lake into a drama-packed one-act work, Balanchine expertly depicts the rapture, heartache, and woe of two doomed lovers and the evil that thwarts their romance.

Fancy Free (Bernstein/Robbins)
Jerome Robbins’ first choreographed ballet and collaboration with composer Leonard Bernstein, Fancy Free is the precursor to Broadway’s On the Town, presenting three sailors and their escapades on shore leave in Manhattan. Fancy Free put Robbins on the map as someone who had a clear eye for creating compelling movement, a deft hand at telling a story, and a creative vision that was unique in the world of theater.

Firebird (Stravinsky/Balanchine, Robbins)
Dressed in painter Marc Chagall’s exquisite sets and costumes, Firebird illustrates an enchanting Russian fairytale and the fantastical creatures of its strange world. New York City Ballet first presented Firebird in1949 at City Center, with choreography by George Balanchine, scenery and costumes by Chagall, and Maria Tallchief in the leading role. In 1970, the choreography was redesigned and became a collaboration between Balanchine and Jerome Robbins, the latter being responsible for the episode with Kastchei the Wizard and his subjects.
New York City Ballet Casting Call – 2023 Children’s Auditions
New York City Ballet is seeking 14 local children, ages 9-12, for non-dancing roles in Firebird by George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins.
