The Carnival of the Animals
Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center
This rich and varied program begins with Baroque works for different instrumental combinations, and continues with Ravel’s Introduction et allegro for the unusual cast of harp, flute, clarinet, and string quartet. CMS closes its summer season at SPAC with Saint-Saëns’s Carnival of the Animals in its original instrumentation for chamber ensemble. The piece is a riotously fun depiction of all kinds of animals, from turtles and kangaroos to lions, birds, and—taking the joke a step further—even pianists!
