Beethoven, Ravel, and Schumann
Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center
Beethoven’s G-minor Cello Sonata is a work of his youth, but in its scope and expressive range it foreshadows many of his great works to come. Ravel dedicated his Sonata for Violin and Cello to the memory of Claude Debussy, incorporating stylistic elements from this late pioneer of French music. Despite calling for only two instruments, the piece creates vast sonic textures that evoke a much larger ensemble. All three musicians join forces for a Schumann piano trio that epitomizes the German Romantic style.
