This class is designed for everyone and is open to all ages, body types, and experience levels. Whether you’ve always wanted to try modern dance or you’re looking for a creative way to move, this class provides a supportive and inclusive environment to begin your journey.
No previous dance experience is required!
This class will explore:
• Foundations of Techniques: Learn the core principles of modern and contemporary dance, including fall and recovery, suspension, contraction and release, and using your breath to initiate movement.
• Body Awareness: Develop a greater understanding of your personal alignment, strength, and flexibility mindfully and safely. We focus on listening to and working with the capabilities of your unique body.
• Connection to the Floor: Discover fundamental floor work (moving safely to and from the ground) that utilizes momentum and gravity, which is a key element of modern dance.
• Movement Vocabulary: Break down basic steps, turns, and traveling movements (locomotor skills) that will expand your expressive range.
The class follows a gentle, progressive format:
1. Warm-Up: A grounding, full-body warm-up often done on the floor to center your focus and prepare your joints and muscles.
2. Technique Exercises: Fundamental movements practiced in the center or across the floor, broken down step-by-step.
3. Creative Phrase: Learn a simple, short movement combination that integrates the skills and concepts covered in class.
4. Cool-Down: Gentle stretching and reflection to complete the session.
This class is open to everyone and supports personal goals, making it eligible for OPWDD Self-Direction funding.
