Program

Join us for a very special concert featuring scenes from musicals by Stephen Sondheim and his collaborators. Sondheim, who celebrates his 90th birthday this year, has changed the face of American musical theater. A boyhood protégé of Oscar Hammerstein II, Sondheim was quickly propelled to celebrity by writing the lyrics for two of Broadway’s most beloved musicals, West Side Story in 1957 and Gypsy in 1959. Since then, he has provided both the words and music for over a dozen Broadway shows, from the 1962 farce A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, to Road Show in 2008. Along the way, Sondheim’s musicals have served as milestones in the evolution of the American musical theater, from Company and Follies (which ran concurrently in their original runs in 1971) to Sweeney Todd (1979), which has become a favorite of opera companies across the country, and Into the Woods (1987), which cast new light on beloved fairy tales. Sondheim has been nominated for twenty-six Tony Awards as lyricist and composer and has won fourteen times, including a lifetime achievement Tony in 2008. Our annual concert in the intimate Supper Club of The Mansion Inn is not to be missed – featuring members of Opera Saratoga’s Young Artist Program in a program celebrating one of America’s musical treasures. The Mansion Inn features cabaret style table seating, with a delicious menu of Gershwin inspired food and drink available for purchase from Cordon Bleu trained Executive Chef Rick Bieber.
