Thursday evening will feature a NYCB program dedicated to SPAC Premieres including new works by 21st-century choreographers Lauren Lovette and Justin Peck, and a rarely performed ballet by Balanchine, coming to Saratoga for the first time.
Haieff Divertimento features a blues pas de deux and combines popular American dance idioms and modern concert dance with classic ballet. The silken precision of this Black & White ballet, set to an Alexei Haieff composition in equal parts vivacious and quietly nostalgic, makes this rarely performed work a delightful nod to the reputed Balanchine style.
Exploring themes of isolation, identity, and self-discovery, Lauren Lovette’s The Shaded Line is an atmospheric journey across five movements, featuring a layered score from Tan Dun and Zac Posen’s elegantly radical take on traditional ballet costuming.
Uniting for the first time, Resident Choreographer Justin Peck will collaborate with contemporary composer Nico Muhly, who will contribute a commissioned score for Peck’s premiere as part of NYCB’s 2020 winter season.
