Program Notes

Resonant Rogues

Asheville, North Carolina’s genre hopping songwriters, The Resonant Rogues, have been winning over audiences worldwide with their signature blend of string band music since 2013. Following their musical inspirations from the Appalachian mountains to the Balkans, through Paris by way of New Orleans, original songs by Sparrow and Keith Josiah Smith speak to the heart with poetic lyrics, and appeal to the ears with stellar musicianship and arrangement.

Cocek! Brass Band

Cocek! Brass Band promises “dance music for those seeking something new and unique, contemplative Old World melodies that hark to a lost era and catchy riffs that will have you singing along and tapping your foot all night long.” The ensemble, led by Sam Dechenne since 2014, is influenced by Easten-European and New Orleans dance songs, Afrobeat, Klezmer, and elements of reggae and Western classical pieces.

Dreamers’ Circus

Rune Tonsgaard Sørensen, Ale Carr, and Nikolaj Busk came together to form Dreamers’ Circus in 2009 after an impromptu jam session in Copenhagen. The Scandinavian musicians have toured across Europe, Japan, Australia, and North America with their inventive reimaginings of Nordic folk and traditional tunes and have collaborated with the likes of The Copenhagen Philharmonic, The Danish String Quartet, Swedish folk singer Sofia Karlsson, and more. Dreamers’ Circus honors tradition as a foundation from which to build something new and exciting as they become a “driving force in Nordic world music.”
