Today for the first time in 53 years, SPAC announced the cancellation of its 2020 Summer Classical Season.

To find it necessary to cancel what would have been one of the most ambitious and artistically inspiring seasons to date is utterly gut-wrenching and inconceivable. But the indisputable truth is that it would be simply impossible to find a way to keep the artists, staff and community safe in the face of the threats of the coronavirus pandemic.

Since it opened, SPAC has been a beacon of hope, light and refuge for the community — and the support of the community has been critical to its life and longevity. While our traditional season is unable to continue for 2020, we are deeply committed to providing, through every outlet available to us, the kind of inspiring and transformative experiences for which SPAC is known and loved. Our dedication to art, artists and community remains undimmed. If anything, we feel more urgently galvanized than ever to provide support, sanctuary and inspiration for our community during this time of uncertainty and darkness. In order to accomplish this, we will need your help.

SPAC depends on ticket sales and the generosity of individuals and corporate underwriters for 80% of its annual budget. The devastating loss of millions of dollars of ticket income, event sponsorships and other key sources of revenue is going to hit SPAC incredibly hard. If you are able, please consider making a tax deductible gift to SPAC today. Help us to ensure the future of world-class programming and a flagship education program that serves more than 50,000 students throughout the Capital Region.

Minimize Risk, Flatten the Curve

At SPAC, our Administrative Office is closed to the public and office employees are working from home to help minimize the spread of COVID-19. Employees are also adhering to social distancing procedures directed by the State of New York and the Center for Disease Control. We strongly encourage our patrons to follow the same protocols and be as informed as possible from government sources. How can I donate my tickets to SPAC?

Resources for Artists and Artist Communities

Artists and arts communities have been hit especially hard by the delays and cancellations of performances, leading to extreme financial hardship.

National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) – Information on the CARES Act, grant applications for individuals and organizations, and updates on financial support for affected artists

Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS – The COVID-19 Emergency Assistance Fund established by Broadway Cares helps artists on stage and behind the scenes get emergency health care, financial assistance and counseling.

Recording Academy/MusiCares Foundation – Artists losing revenue due to the current crisis are encouraged to apply for the COVID-19 Relief Fund through MusiCares

New York Council on the Arts – Offering additional resources for financial assistance, management support, the CARES Act, emergency grants for artists and more.

Creative Capital’s Artist Relief – A coalition led by Creative Capital has established a fund for artists in all 50 states, with opportunities to apply for up to $5,000 in financial support

Americans for the Arts – Resource and response center with additional resources and consistent updates on funding for artists
